I had my monthly appointment with my therapist yesterday. For those who don't know, I've been seeing her for about a year now working on Intuitive Eating and all my food issues, and just getting my life together in general.
Some of the things I talked to her about this session are...
- How happy I am that my fitness level is where it's at. I missed exercise for a whole week because of getting sick and yesterday I got back to it and got through my workout just fine. I felt GREAT.
- How happy I am that I actually MISS working out when I don't get to, and I look forward to getting back into it. I woke up so excited because I felt better today and knew I felt good enough to work out. The old me would have felt like "oh man, I'm better now guess I have to try to work out again." Instead, the new me is like "yes!!! I feel good enough to work out!! whoo hoo!!" :)
- How the weight loss has slowed quite a lot but I am still feeling so great and so happy about everything.
- How I am focusing on how far I've come instead of how far I have left to go.
- How I am celebrating where I am and who I am right now. I am working to not criticize my body and to enjoy it the way it is.
- My biggest challenge right now - sugar. Been letting too much of it into my life. Going to try and "sugar detox" again so I can nix the cravings. The past week has been very... sugary. LOL! Yesterday was great, no candy, just a coffee drink (and I only get those 1-2x per week). The candy has been the problem. Gotta get back to where I only have it occasionally, not several times a day.
That's most of the health/fitness stuff I talked to her about. We also talked quite a bit about my father in law and how hubby and I are dealing with that. It was a really good session.
Some other news....
I felt like I had a good body image today. I caught myself in some negative self talk this morning and I completely reversed it. I had put on my workout clothes and looked down and thought -geez, after all this, I see my tummy sticking out when I look down. If I don't suck it in, there it is. SIGH. What's wrong with me? But then I thought, let's really LOOK at this. So I turned sideways and looked at the side view of me in the full length mirror. I let my tummy completely relax and hang out. I then tried to REALLY SEE what I looked like without any slanted viewpoint. And you know what I thought? NOT BAD!!!! Even when I let it alllllll hang out... it's not that bad. Especially compared to where I came from. So I told myself, way to go! What an accomplishment! And I felt better about my tummy all day :)

Week 23 Update
(I'm not going to repeat everything from my video, so if you can't watch it now, please do go back and watch it when you can.)
This is my first crack at doing WEEKLY videos instead of just monthly. I had PLENTY to say this week. I really enjoy making the videos so I will be trying to do so every week and see if I can keep up with that :)
This Week's Weigh-in...
Workouts This Week...
Fri 10/22 4 Mile Super Challenge DVD (Leslie Sansone)
Sat 10/23 1.0 mile walk in 20 mins
Sun 10/24 1.8 mile walk in 40 mins
Tues 10/26 1.6 mile walk in 30 mins
Wed 10/27 40 mins ARC trainer- level 4 hill intervals, stretching
My personal training on Monday got canceled so I walked Tuesday instead. :) I have workouts planned already for tomorrow and Sunday. Really ENJOYING my workouts this week! Here's a photo from our Sunday walk...
Some Things I Ate This Week...
I have been taking a lot less food pics lately since I eat a lot of the same stuff over and over, but I do need to get better about taking pics again. We had dinner at my aunt's house on Sunday and I didn't take pics of anything!!
Here's the ones I do have from this week...
Two round whole wheat crackers (Archer Farms), each with an ounce of chicken salad (Market Pantry). About 1/4 cup of grapes and 1/4 cup of cheese and salami diced up. I did finish it but it turned out to make me a little too full.
1/4 cup Campbell's creamy tomato soup and 1 small fajita sized whole wheat tortilla with about 2oz of tuna and 2 slices american cheese. I was only able to eat 1/2 of the tortilla shown here so I ended up saving the other half and having it later with another 1/4 cup of soup. Very comforting on a cold day. Since the soup container has 2 cups, it's going to take me a while to get through it! Ha.
That's all the news for this week. I had to cut time from my video where I was talking about some great blogs I've come across this week and how timely they were... they really spoke to me and helped me change my mindset also. I'll do a separate post soon sharing some of these blogs and the insight I've gained from them!

Pushing
I have to really push myself to work out. I fight and fight myself. Today I wanted to cancel on Brandy up to the last second. BUT... I went. That's what matters right? And we are going tomorrow, too! I feel so good about myself for making the effort.
I really wish my stupid heel wasn't such a problem. Besides my foot pain I still deal with a bit of a bone spur on my heel. I had surgery to remove the bone spur back in 2003 I think, but they didn't do a very thorough job and I still have a bit of a bump that just rubs and rubs against the back of my shoe no matter how tight I tie my shoe. Bandaids come off... does anyone have a good suggestion for this???? Those blister bandaids don't work because they're so thin. For non-protruding things they work but for a protruding bump like this it doesn't stop it from blistering. HELP!
Anyway we had a really good walk. I am chatting online with Brandy now and she has the Wii Fit so I was asking her about it. The only problem is it records your weight and you MUST look at it - and I know myself and know I cannot see my weight right now, at least not in these beginning stages. Maybe later one. Right now I need to focus on exercise for how it benefits me and ignore my weight so that it does not become the point. Brandy and I were talking about that and she's managed to get past that. Here are some great things she said:
"It's just a game, I dont care anymore, I think I got to the point were I went completely crazy about the number and lost it and then came back to reality and realized I didn't care anymore as long as I could go outside and have fun without dying and feel healthy. I dont care I just want to feel good and my weight isn't important because the girls on the cover of magazines are not typical, that is society's image, not mine and my family doesn't care as long as I can have fun with them...so I focus on becoming healthy and feeling good."
This is exactly the point behind Intuitive Eating and rejecting the diet mentality.
I told Ian my feet hurt and he wanted to do something nice for me. I couldn't think of anything. So I told him what would make me happiest is if he went for a walk or got some activity tonight even though his legs are tired from yesterday's walk. And he said he will after dinner tonight! He is being so sweet. I feel so happy :)

Hour Walk
Whew. I just got done doing another hour walk with Brandy. I think it was actually an hour and 20 minutes. It kicked my ASS. Today we walked in my neighborhood, and the streets are so slanted. So we'd go downhill one block and turn around and be going uphill the whole next block. Did you know a block feels like FOREVER when it's super uphill? Even the downhill sides started to feel hard after a while because they used totally different muscles. It works out so well walking with her - she is a little slower than her normal self because she has some knee problems... but it's still a good workout for her. Whereas walking with her really speeds me up. I was really pushing myself and it felt great. I would never go that fast and for that long if I were alone.
It's true I am eating some Haagen-Dazs now :) But it is well deserved and it's helping me cool off, too. Sure is nice not feeling guilty to have ice cream. I know dieters are thinking "you're ruining your workout!" But I don't see it that way. It may have calories but it doesn't take away the good work I did for my cardiovascular system and my muscles. Plus it's yummy and makes me happy :) tee hee.
Here's to happiness and health!

OMG I Went to the Gym (Edit: And A Note on Quality of Life)
I haven't been to the gym for an actual gym workout in... I don't know how long. A year? I've done things at home, gone for walks, and even done water aerobics... but that whole "me & the machine" vibe hasn't been part of my life for a long time. Yesterday I remembered why I love it... and also why I hate it. LOL. I did just 30 minutes on a "true stride", which is like an elliptical but better. It was hard. Really hard. I was exhausted... but that could have something to do with having only eaten a bagel all day by 4 pm. I just didn't have an appetite.
On the upside, I'm not even sore today even though my legs were SO fatigued afterwards yesterday. Also it was fun being able to watch a movie on my ipod while working out. Made me want to work out for an hour and a half! I just couldn't yet since I'm just starting out.
Right now I am planning to get punch passes to 3 gyms. I still want to be able to go to the swim place by my house when I feel like swimming, because they have the biggest pool. I haven't checked out the westminster center yet but it's where I go outdoor walking anyway, and I bet it's nice - it looks like a huge place. Then the one by my parents house - which is where I went yesterday - seems to have the best workout machines. So I really don't want to commit to a membership anywhere - I want to have my choice of where I feel like going! And of course this time of year it's finally cooling off and I've got a couple months to do stuff outside before it gets too cold.
My friend Kellie is working out too - she has lost 18 pounds in 6 weeks and I'm so proud of her. Unfortunately she doesn't give herself ANY credit because she thinks she could be trying a lot harder. Anyway it's in both our best interests to work out together when we can. Tomorrow is my scrapbooking day with her and we're going to work out first! Yeah!
At least right now I have no plans to weigh myself or worry at all about how much weight I lose from exercising. I just want to feel better. I'll know when my clothes get looser and I can fit into my other jeans :) Someday I might weigh myself, but I prefer not to. Just look at my friend who isn't happy with having lost an average of 3 pounds a week for the last 6 weeks. I do not want to put myself through those mind games. All I care about is sticking to an exercise routine that will make me FEEL good about myself. And of course, pay more attention to what I eat. Haven't done well with that lately. I've been stuffing myself too much again. Gotta work on that.
Update:
A very well-meaning comment was left by my friend Christine and this is in no way meant as anything against her, but I wanted to share her comment here and my response to it.
Her:
I agree about avoiding the scale, it can be depressing. It's a good way to gauge your weight loss though. Maybe grin and bear it, write it down, then stay off the scale for another month? Oh, and don't forget to measure! I was feeling sorta down about my weight loss lately till I measured myself and my chest was 2 inches smaller! No complaints from me!! :)
I'm bad about using my clothes as a measurement since I only wear one size: Big and Baggy!
Go for it!
Me:
Well honestly since reading intuitive eating I don't really have a desire to "measure" my weight loss in any way. When I said that about my clothes I just meant that'll be a clue, it's not like a goal or anything. All I care about is feeling healthy and strong. Honestly.
No scale for me, no measuring... not measuring myself with my clothes either. I just don't care! All I care about is less pain, being able to walk a lot, go hiking, do the things I love to do and be happy. No more torturing myself over my weight or my size, I'm done with that!
I just felt the need to share this because I want it to be clear that weight loss is my goal but the amount does not matter to me. The reason for losing it is for my spine, my joints - less pain - more ability to do the things I love. Because I know at this weight I'm not happy because I am in pain and I'm restricted. But the number is irrelevant and I don't have a number related goal, and I never will again. I'm done with all of that and the pain and self-destruction it causes.
When we travel I want to be able to walk all day and see the sights - sure I'll be tired after like anyone else - but I don't want to be miserable after 3 hours of walking around. I want to enjoy the travel. I also want to go hiking and enjoy the mountains here. Especially with the high altitude (when we hike we're at about 9,000-11,000 ft), the heart has a hard time!! I want to be in better cardiovascular shape so I don't get so out of breath -again with the goal of enjoying myself.
What I am doing here, is trying to improve my quality of life. If that happens and I'm 270 pounds, fine. If I'm 240 lbs, fine. Less, great. But the best would be not knowing the pounds and not caring. THAT is quality of life.
